Our history

Wilhelm and Annegret Hess, the parents of the current owner, decided to reopen Hotel Sonneck in 1976. They recognized the potential of the location, which Mr and Mrs Traue expanded when they took over in 1995. Bus tour groups determined the daily business for many years. Vacation guests from Berlin enjoyed their three-week vacation in Nordhessen. Over the years, the target group changed. A three-week vacation trip became a short break. Today, the focus is on conferences and seminars.

Actively shaping the future

Hotels in particular need to take an active role in shaping their future. A critical look at our own consumption of natural resources was also unavoidable at Hotel Sonneck. The path: GreenSign certification

Since 2010, the Traue family has been continuing to develop the Hotel Sonneck. With the commissioning of the first combined heat and power plant, energy consumption and operational processes also came into focus. Energy-efficiency upgrades in the guest rooms and conference rooms followed in 2011.

In the years that followed, investments were made in solar panels, energy-optimization software, new lighting, rainwater cisterns, washing machines, aerators, electric vehicle charging stations, thermal insulation glazing, and a wood chip heating system. Day-to-day operations also include staff training, waste reduction and recycling, as well as regional partnerships. The Sonnenblatt Restaurant offers a seasonal menu featuring vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free dishes.

Since 2021, the Hotel Sonneck has been certified at GreenSign Hotel Level 4. Our goal is to continue offering our guests a place where they can feel at home. The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals serve as a guide for the Traue family in fostering dialogue and driving further progress.
